During internet safety day Reception learnt a new song to remind us of how to stay safe online and when using the tablets from Buddy the dog. Buddy’s ‘Use Your Tablet Safely’ Song (Sung to the tune of Frère Jacques): Ask your grown-up, Ask your grown-up, Ask for help! Ask for help! Use your tablet safely, Use your tablet safely, Woof, woof, woof! Woof, woof, woof! We discussed different scenarios where we would need to ask for help or tell a grown up.
Year 1 learnt about how to stay safe online by not sharing personal information. We also learnt that not everyone is who they say they are online and that we should not speak to strangers. Year 1 learnt about what to do if someone says something that makes them feel uncomfortable, sad or worried. We know that we have the right to feel safe and happy whilst online.
Year 2 learnt about how to stay safe online by not sharing personal information about themselves. We learnt that sometimes people choose different pictures to represent themselves online. This can be a good thing as it protects our identify from strangers.
Year 3 began by revising and revisiting prior knowledge on how to stay safe on the internet by always asking a grown-up before going online and not sharing personal information with people met online. Then the children learnt about the different ways that identity can be represented online such as an avatar and what identity means to them. The children then created a pledge with the title free to be.
In Year 5 we looked at how information can be copied or adapted online. We watched a video which helped us to understand how to keep ourselves safe online and ways that we can keep our information safe. Then we debated the question: Should people be able to change who they are online? Finally, created an avatar which we could use online and created posters to help others be safe on the internet.
Year 6 looked at ‘Free to be safe from gender stereotypes’. We discussed what gender stereotypes were, stereotypes in the UK, the effect of stereotyping and how this relates to using the internet and staying safe. We discussed, the evolution of gender stereotypes in films and adverts, YouTube videos fighting gender stereotypes, how to recognise negative gender stereotyping online etc. The children were very mature and had some good discussions and debates about this topic.
